The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has long been developing a project in Albania, hoping to eliminate hate speech and actions between Tirana and Partizan fans.

Hate speech permeates various aspects of our lives, from online platforms to public spaces and beyond. The consequences of hate speech cannot be overstated. Words, when used as weapons, have a deep and lasting impact on people and communities. Beyond immediate clashes of opinion, hate speech has the ability to inflict deep emotional wounds, erode self-esteem and fracture social fabric.

In response, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Albania have partnered with the Albanian Sports Science Association (ASSA) to harness the power of sport in the fight against hate speech.

The Power of Fans: United to fight hate speech in Albanian football

This partnership, in the framework of the regional UN initiative "Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality and Trust", financed by the UN Peacebuilding Fund, aims to promote social interaction, tolerance and fight hate speech between clubs youth fans, especially between Tirana and Partizan.

There is a long and challenging relationship between the fans of the sports clubs "Partizani" and "Tirana". This relationship, rooted in decades of competition between two of the country's most popular and successful sports clubs, has spread to stadiums, roads and the digital space.

The spread of hate speech and toxic behavior "online" and "offline" between these fan clubs has reached alarming levels, prompting this new initiative "Fan Power: Uniting for Respect".

The initiative aims to break down barriers and build bridges between young fans of rival clubs through educational and team-building activities. Raising awareness and educating young fans about the consequences of hate speech are essential aspects. The educational sessions will seek to raise awareness among young people about the impact of their words, with a parallel effort to encourage diversity, inclusion and gender equality within fan communities and sports-related activities.

In a dynamic approach, the initiative will have social gatherings and team building events, facilitating the exchange of visits between the fan communities of Tirana Football Club and Partizan. Emphasizing a peer-to-peer approach to learning, this initiative empowers young people to positively influence their peers by fostering the sharing of experiences.

Over four months, activities include bringing together youth fan teams, facilitating visits to football club houses, organizing fan club meetings, hosting a Derby Match stadium event and empowering young people to share their experiences.

This approach aims to create a lasting impact on fan dynamics and mitigate the negative effects of hate speech by fostering understanding and unity.

"Fan Power: Uniting for Respect" is a pioneering initiative set to reshape the dynamic between rival fan clubs.

By promoting positive cooperation, the initiative aims to reduce the incidence of hate speech, especially in stadiums and online spaces. The initiative aims to set a precedent for fostering a culture of inclusiveness and tolerance among diverse fan audiences, providing a blueprint for replication in the wider sports community.

Through the unifying power of sport, the initiative also aims to foster a more harmonious and respectful future.
