A story that touched the hearts of millions of football fans around the world has come to a tragic end. Ronald Gjoka, the Albanian student who became famous in 2013 after entering the pitch to hug Cristiano Ronaldo during a friendly match in Miami, has died in a car accident in Florida.
The moment Ronaldo ran towards the Portuguese star during Real Madrid's match against Chelsea went viral. After the incident, he was arrested and spent a night in custody, facing criminal charges that could jeopardize his academic future and his stay in the United States. During that brief encounter, he told Ronaldo: " You're my mentor. You're like a father to me ."
After learning about the Albanian student's situation, Cristiano Ronaldo personally intervened. He sent an official letter to the Miami-Dade District Attorney's Office, requesting that the case be dismissed. In the letter, the footballer described Ronald Gjoka as a respectable student who had made a mistake without intending to harm anyone, and stressed that a single moment should not destroy his future. The charges against him were later dropped.
Thirteen years later, fate seemed to be creating the opportunity for another meeting between them. With the Portuguese national team training in Palm Beach Gardens ahead of the World Cup, Ronald Gjoka hoped to meet his idol once again.
But this wish did not come true. On June 7, he lost his life in a car accident in Florida.
The news was confirmed by his mother, Malva Gjoka, in a message to Portuguese journalist Andre Ventura , who was trying to arrange the meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo.
" Ron would have loved this very much, but unfortunately he passed away in a car accident. He was very happy that Portugal would be training here and was hoping to see his idol once again. If you have the chance to speak to Cristiano Ronaldo, please thank him for everything he did for my son and how much this meant to him ."
