"When we were small, we 'struggled' for scorers: Kristian

Many football fans may have heard of Steven Shpendi, a starter in his first season in Serie A with Empoli. But in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, exactly in the team where Steven's talent exploded, his twin Christian plays.

Finally, after a year spent in his brother's shadow, he had a strong start to the season with Cesena, with 5 goals and 2 assists in six Serie C games: "I'm very happy for my brother, but at the same time I am focused on my path. I want to give my best in every match to take Cesena to the top", he says for "cronachedispogliatoio.it".

Foot on the gas for Spendin- Anyone who has seen the two of them play on the field will definitely be amazed. A competitive energy and determination that was unusual for two boys who were born in 2003. Both are identical, both aesthetically and in their way of being on the field. The 2022-'23 season was worth it, which also brought the jump to Serie A for Stiven Shpendi, the author of 12 goals and 3 assists in 29 games, while his brother finished with 5 games played and 1 goal: "Last year he did not it went the way i wanted.

After my first start, between injuries and limited playing time, I wasn't able to express myself at my best. But Steven did it, and I'm proud of him," he admits. However, comparing the data for this period of the season of Steven last year and Christian this year, one thing is noticeable: the playing time is very similar (318 minutes). The difference is the goals, because after 6 games Christian has already scored twice as many goals as the current Empoli striker. So far he has scored with his right, left and header.

Football, a family thing -  The Shpendi twins are a unique and rare case of two brothers who are making a name for themselves in professional football and are doing it together: "Steveni and I have a special relationship. We have always been together since we were little and we have always shared everything," he says. Both were born in Ancona on May 19, 2003 in a family of Albanian origin that immigrated to Italy in the nineties. His first experience of football came early, at the age of 6, at Real Metauro, an amateur club based in Pesaro. In adolescence, the boys enter the Academy of San Marino.

Here comes the intuition of the Cesena scouts, who bring the Shpendi twins to the youth academy. In those colors from U-17 to the first team, even winning a championship with the youth. That year, both were irresistible: Steven scored 23 goals, Christian 15. Performances that cannot go unnoticed, in the eyes of Mimo Toscano, coach of the first team. From that moment, a rapid ascent began that brought Steven and now Christian to the center of attention: "I am very attached to this club, Cezena gave me and my brother the opportunity to play the football that matters. And then there are the fans. Wonderful. What a show they put on. Always full and never stop singing. Our twelfth man on the field", says Kristian Shpendi.

Similarity – The road is still very long for both footballers. Steven is called to contribute to the rescue of Empoli. Christian wants and must continue so that he can return together with his brother: "I watch all of Steven's matches and, when we go out, we compare the situations on the field. He is very good at dribbling, maybe I move better in the penalty area. There was never envy between us, I always wish only the best for my brother".

The two are also "very" similar. Coaches, parents and even teammates confuse them with each other from a young age. "It often happened, especially in the summer tournaments when we were children, that we would both 'fight' for the title of the best scorer. But, unfortunately, it happened that they confused us and assigned the goals incorrectly, favoring one more than the other", concludes the attacker, who is one of Cesena's most promising players. After a few months, his last name, also thanks to Steven's work, was on the pages of all the local newspapers. Fans scream his name at every move. Like in the last derby with Rimini, where he scored in front of 15 thousand people. He recently renewed his contract with Cesena until 2026.
