"Luis Enrique inspired me", Johan Cruyff's son tells the most

Jordi Cruyff appeared on the popular podcast 'Stick to Football', hosted by Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, Ian Uray and Jill Scott. He spoke from the heart about an event that marked him forever, the illness of his daughter Danae.

Gary Neville commented that there was a period when Jordi seemed to have disappeared: "It was a bit mysterious and you said that no one knew what was going on in your life and what had happened to your family."

" I was in Barcelona. We had won La Liga and I waited until the next day. I had already planned it in advance, but I waited until the next day, after we won La Liga, to go to the president and say: 'Listen, I feel that's it. I've done my part. We won La Liga and that's it.' I was talking to clubs about getting back into coaching and one of those days I experienced the most difficult moment of my life, when you find out your daughter has cancer. Then you have to make decisions. In football, we always think that football is everything. We complain, we are in a bad mood, we are in a good mood when we win, all these things. And we think that it is the most important thing in the world. But then reality hits you like a ton of bricks. Now I see things differently than I did before. I didn't watch a single match for over a year. I wasn't... I would watch it for five minutes, turn it off and my mind wasn't there. My mind was just focused on being there with my daughter, the surgery, the bone, the titanium implants, the chemotherapy ..."

My father passed away. But with my father, I’m at peace. For me, that’s the right order: grandfather, father, son, and then on. That’s the normal order. With other things, I’m not at peace. So I think I was also, in a way, very angry with the world.” Saying, ‘This isn’t fair. This shouldn’t happen. I should be the one leaving, not her.’ But then there’s a point where you have to wake up and say, ‘I can’t complain, because she’s here.’ And then I see others who have lost their daughters. And who am I to be angry? I can’t be angry. I have to be grateful. Which is probably where I’ve been for a while now. In front of her, you know, you have to be strong because she has to be positive and believe, you know, and you have to be… well, let’s be honest, she’s probably stronger than me .”

At that moment, Danae, Jord's daughter, entered the studio, smiling. " I'm very well and healthy, which is the most important thing ," she said, turning to her father and gently saying, "Don't cry."

The cancer diagnosis was almost accidental. “ We went to the hospital on a Friday afternoon because her knee was blocking up. We went to the reception and they told us the appointment was on Thursday, and just as we were getting ready to go home, suddenly I heard a voice and it was Pako Bioska, the doctor from Chelsea who I hadn’t seen in many years. We talked for 15 minutes. And then the doctor we were supposed to see, Ramon Kugat, examined my daughter’s knee, and I remember looking at him and he closed his eyes for 30 seconds .

I think he was probably thinking, ' Okay, how do I say this?' And then he said, 'I don't think it's the knee, and I want to study this a little more. ' After the tests, they gave us the news: ' No, it's cancer. ' That's when my life changed.
