Legendary German footballer Mikael Balak was truly brilliant on the field and few could do the same with him. But in the football world he was remembered as a loser, perhaps the biggest ever, considering the many defeats suffered in the biggest games of his rich career.
As a 21-year-old, he managed to win the Bundesliga title when one of the greatest miracles in the history of German football took place. It was the 1997-1998 season.
The Kaiserslaturen were declared champions of Germany to everyone's surprise and Balak was called the 'Little Kaiser'. He was considered the true heir of the unforgettable Franz Beckenbauer. He later played for Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
Balak experienced his first fiasco in 2001. Then, as a Leverkusen player, he lost the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League titles in two weeks. Fate did not follow him at Bayern Munich either. He won the Bundesliga, but on the international stage he was totally unsuccessful with the German giants.
This was followed by four years at Chelsea, where the loss in the Champions League final against Manchester United in 2008 will be his toughest. His tears mixed with the Moscow rain and then went around the football world. He had no luck with the German national team either. He was its captain and lost the final of the World Cup and Euro 2008. Defeat against Italy in the World Cup semi-final in 2006, when the Germans hosted the tournament, particularly hurt him.
In his private life, he enjoyed adventures with married or busy women. Former teammate Kristian Lel accused him of ruining the lives of others.
"Balak enters the private lives of others and destroys them without thinking. If he is the captain of Germany, he thinks he can do whatever he wants", said Lel after learning that Balak had slept with his partner.
He suffered the heaviest and most painful blow in 2021, when his 18-year-old son Emilio died, and then he withdrew into himself. After recovering mentally, he started working as an analyst of football matches.
