The match with Israel ignites Italy, protests and clashes with police outside

The “Piazza della Repubblica” in Udine has been filled with at least eight thousand protesters supporting the police headquarters and over 15,000 supporting the organizers. The “pro-PAL” march, organized by the Udine Committee for Palestine with the Palestinian community of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto and various committees, has attracted over 300 groups, associations and movements. The march through the streets of the city, where the Italy-Israel World Cup qualifying match is being played, is led by a white van filled with slogans: “ We are all Palestinians ”, “ Free Palestine ”, “ There is no such thing as good Zionism ”.

For two hours, everything went relatively smoothly, but as the match approached the start, tensions rose: in “Piazza Primo Maggio”, the last stop of the march that started at 6:15 pm, some activists broke the security cordon of the Udine Committee for Palestine, trying to establish physical contact with the police cordon. Along the route of the march and in other points of the city, the police intervened with tear gas and water cannons against the protesters who were pushing the protesters away and were openly confronting the police. There were minor injuries and arrests. Journalists covering the event were also attacked, while the peaceful part of the march called on citizens to leave the square.

Regarding the peace treaty signed yesterday in Sharm el-Sheikh, the protesters' stance is clear: "The first day of peace will be the last day of occupation", is the banner that guides the demonstrators. " No one is free without a free Palestine !" On the one hand, the protesters have come from all over Italy, and on the other, the police and carabinieri are keeping a vigilant eye: a thousand men, especially careful to prevent infiltration by violent suburban groups. Many vendors have lowered their shutters as a precaution. Some are angry: " For us, it's a lost day of work. These people are demonstrating for a peace that has been achieved. What is the point ?"

At the head of the procession is the "blindfolded statue of justice", the work of the Friulian architect Tommaso Pascuti and previously inspected by the police. The statue raises a red card "against Israel", echoing one of the protest slogans, "against its continued membership in FIFA and its ability to participate in international competitions".
