Fernando dos Santos Carvalho, the man who gave the legendary Ronaldo "R9" his first chance at football, lives today in difficult conditions, homeless and ill.
In 1984, he was running a football school in Rio de Janeiro, where he spotted the talent of an unknown boy who would later become an icon of the football world.
"I accompanied him to every training session. I promised his mother that I would take care of him," Carvalho says of Ronaldo, who initially played in a few friendlies before bursting onto the international scene.
Despite the early relationship, Carvalho says Ronaldo has shown no sign of gratitude:
"I asked for help several times, but he always rejected me."
He says he even traveled to São Paulo to meet him, but was met with silence.
While Ronaldo enjoys success and fame, the man who discovered him says he lives forgotten and in misery, still waiting for an answer.
