Norway has started its 2026 World Cup adventure with a victory, defeating Iraq 4-1 at Boston's Gillette Stadium, in a match valid for Group I.
The Nordic team, led by Erling Haaland, dominated most of the match, although the Iraqis managed to temporarily restore balance and leave their mark on this challenge.
The first half was characterised by cautious play from both teams. The score was broken in the 29th minute, when Haaland capitalised on a Wolfe assist and beat goalkeeper Hassan to give Norway the lead. Iraq's response came ten minutes later, with Hussein scoring the equaliser in the 39th minute.
However, the Iraqis' joy was short-lived. Just a few minutes later, Haaland scored again, restoring the Norwegians' lead and ending the first half with a score of 2-1.
In the second half, Norway sealed the victory. Ostigard scored the third goal for the team led by Stale Solbakken, while in the last minutes an own goal by Hussein completed the final score of 4-1.
This success gives Norway three important points in its return to a World Cup after a 28-year absence.
After the first matches, Group I is led by Norway and France with three points each. France defeated Senegal 3-1, while Senegal and Iraq remain without points.
In the next round, France will face Iraq on June 22, while Norway will play Senegal on June 23.
