"I almost died", Vilas Boash reveals the drama of life after 3 years

Andre Vilas-Boash has disappeared from the radar. The youngest coach to win a European competition, thanks to the Europa League at the head of Porto in the 2010-2011 season, has been out of the green fields for three years.

His last experience was at Olympique de Marseille, in France, which ended with his resignation in February 2021. However, before and during this adventure, the Portuguese coach had to fight serious health problems.

In 2018, after participating in the "Dakar Rally", which ended with a back injury, precisely thanks to this problem, it was discovered that Vilas-Boash had cancer. The Portuguese coach addressed this topic in an interview for "Record": " Doctors had to remove half of my thyroid and it turned out that I was dying during the operation.

After 10 minutes I started to feel sick, I remember thinking: I'm dying, I'm dying. I pressed the alarm button, the nurse came and I just remember hearing her screaming, taking my bed, running through the hospital to the ER. The doors were forced open, the injection and… When I woke up I was on my feet.

A few more minutes and I would have died of asphyxiation. It was all very curious, because through thyroid tests they discovered another tumor on my back, which also had to be removed. If the accident had not happened, I would never have discovered these diseases .
