"If it weren't for my wife, I'd be dead," Wayne Rooney talks

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has spoken openly about his battle with alcohol, admitting that his wife Coleen saved him during his darkest period. The statement was made during a podcast chat with former teammate Rio Ferdinand.

Rooney said he had entered a dangerous phase of his life and did not want to burden others with his personal problems.

" There came a time when I was overdoing it. There was a period when I was struggling with alcohol. I couldn't talk to anyone, I didn't want anyone to carry my burden. I truly believe that if she wasn't there for me (my wife), I would be dead."

"She never controlled me, but she helped me control myself. She is the best person I could have met. I didn't know how to handle the pressure; I felt like I was letting everyone down. Alcohol was my salvation ," the English attacking legend declared.

Words coming from one of the biggest names in British football and shedding light on the psychological pressure that often accompanies elite sporting careers.

Rooney, known for his careers at Everton, Manchester United and the England national team, has always been an influential public figure and his story brings attention back to the importance of family support and professional help for athletes struggling with addiction.
