A meeting of the European governing body's national racing committee voted in favor of the change, which will be ratified by the executive committee later this week. UEFA had planned to return to the national finalists with 23 players, after allowing the expansion of the list with 3 players for "EURO 2020", due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.
Expanded national teams with 26 finalist players were also allowed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because it was played in the middle of the national season. Some international coaches were critical of 23-man squads and the suggestion to stick with 26 players was raised at a recent EURO 2024 coaches' meeting, where the idea gained widespread support.
Ronald Koeman, the coach of the Netherlands, described UEFA's decision to reduce the number of players (from 26 to 23) that each national team can take to this summer's European Championship as absurd. England manager Gareth Southgate had previously favored 23 players because of the difficulty of managing an extended squad.
However, he has changed his mind following the amount of injuries he has suffered in the Premier League this season. In March, Southgate said he would name an initial 26-man squad for EURO 2024 as UEFA reviewed requirements for the size of the final squad. Silvinjo, the coach of the Albanian national team, as well as Didier Deschamps, were against this decision already taken by UEFA, which also awaits the certification of the Executive Committee.
Both remained in the absolute minority, so UEFA has decided to listen to the majority of the "EURO 2024" finalist coaches, allowing them to take 26 players with them to the European Championship in Germany. Silvinho raised the problem of group management, which would be difficult with 26 players. This is also due to the fact that some of them will be forced to stand on the stand, not even on the bench, which can disrupt the harmony within the group.
