Enzo Mareska has been mentioned as a surprise candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola on the Manchester City bench, should the legendary coach leave the club.
The current Chelsea manager is high on the City board's list as one of the main options for a replacement, although Guardiola is under contract until the summer of 2027 and has previously hinted that he could take a break from football after his time with City ends.
However, despite expectations that Guardiola will honour his contract, Manchester City are preparing alternative plans in case he decides to leave early. Sources in Spain say that the chances are growing that Guardiola will leave this summer without seeing out his current deal.
Mareska has a history with Manchester City. He joined the club's development staff in 2020, following a spell at West Ham. The Italian then left for a short spell as coach of Parma in Serie B, before returning to the Etihad in 2022 as Guardiola's assistant.
In the summer of 2024, Mareska was appointed Chelsea manager, having guided Leicester City to the top of the Championship. In his first season with the Londoners, the Blues finished fourth in the Premier League, also winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup.
This season, Mareska continues to show positive results, with Chelsea ranked fourth in the league after 16 matches. His current contract with the London club is valid until 2029, with an option to renew for another season.
However, the Italian coach has raised questions over his future at Stamford Bridge after making some cryptic statements about a "lack of support" following the 2-0 win over Everton at the weekend.
“ The last 48 hours have been the worst since I joined the club, because a lot of people didn’t support us ,” Mareska said. “ It’s been the worst 48 hours because people didn’t support me and the team .”
He did not clarify who he was referring to, but added: " In general. I love the fans and we are very happy with their support ."
