It's time for the United States to fall in line with the rest of the world and stop calling "football" football and not soccer, according to President Donald Trump.
“ When you look at what’s happened to the sport that we call soccer in the United States, we never call it that because we have another conflict with a thing called football (American football) ,” Trump said while attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw on Friday in Washington, D.C. “ But when you think about it, this is soccer, there’s no question about it. We have to find another name. It really doesn’t make sense when you think about it .”
Globally, fans distinguish between the sports by using the term "American football" to refer to the tight-fitting, heavy-duty football played at the NFL, college, and youth levels. Americans who use the term soccer are often derided and made fun of, while others defend the usage by saying it originated in England in the 1800s to distinguish rugby football from regular soccer.
