France captain Kylian Mbappé has expressed his disappointment after the 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final, admitting that France failed to show the level necessary to secure qualification for the final.
In an interview with M6, the Real Madrid striker said that the French team failed both tactically and technically.
"I think we didn't play the game we wanted, neither tactically, nor technically, nor in terms of our overall level. When you don't do what you need to in a World Cup semi-final, you don't win," said the French star.
Mbappé described the elimination as a huge disappointment, noting that France made many technical errors throughout the match.
"Spain followed their plan, the one they are known for: a team that keeps the ball and controls the pace of the game. We wanted to put pressure on them from the top to not let them set their own pace, because they are better than us at controlling the game. And we didn't succeed," he said.
The French striker also highlighted that Spain's midfielders, Rodri and Fabián Ruiz, had the necessary space to organize the game, which according to him significantly influenced the course of the match.
"Technically, our passes and first touches were not at the level of a World Cup semi-final. To put it objectively, we did not have the necessary ingredients on the pitch to reach the final," said Mbappe.
