German footballer Sebastian Hertner has died at the age of 34 after falling from a cable car in Montenegro, an event that occurred on December 21. The center-back for ETSV Hamburg, from the German fifth division, was skiing in Savin Kuk in northern Montenegro when he fell from a height of about 70 meters and died.
According to Bild, one of the chairlifts broke off the frame on the side where Hertner, who was also part of Germany's U-19 team years ago, was sitting. His wife was seriously injured, trapped in the chair and breaking her leg.
"It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our captain Sebastian Hertner suffered a fatal accident during the holidays. We are shocked and infinitely saddened. Our condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Sebastian," his club, ETSV Hamburg, announced.
Three other tourists were also injured in the tragic incident. The cable car station has now been temporarily closed and investigators are continuing their work to unravel the incident.
