The number of people seeking international protection in Albania increased during 2025. According to the latest publication of the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), 144 asylum seekers were registered last year, or 40 more compared to 2024, which indicates an increase in interest in applying for asylum in the country.
The data shows that the majority of asylum seekers came from Egypt, who accounted for 39.6% of the total applications. In second place were Afghan citizens with 11.8%, while Palestinians accounted for 9.7% of asylum requests. The rest of the applications belonged to citizens from various countries, but with a smaller weight in total.
According to the report, asylum applications were not evenly distributed throughout the year. The largest influx was recorded in the months of August, September and October, during which 63.2% of all applications in 2025 were filed. This indicates a significant seasonal concentration of migratory movements towards Albania.
The INSTAT publication also includes data on the acquisition, re-acquisition and renunciation of Albanian citizenship. During 2025, a total of 495 people acquired Albanian citizenship. Of these, 306 people regained citizenship, while 189 acquired it for the first time. One of the most striking indicators in the report is the number of people who have renounced Albanian citizenship. During 2025, 173 people chose to no longer be Albanian citizens.
The figures show that the re-acquisition of citizenship accounts for the largest share of cases, with around 62% of the total number of persons who acquired Albanian citizenship during the year. This indicator mainly relates to Albanian citizens who had previously lost or revoked their citizenship and have completed the procedures to regain it.
Regarding the origin of the persons who acquired Albanian citizenship, over half of them, or 56.1%, were citizens of Kosovo. In second place were citizens of Turkey with 20.1%, while North Macedonia and Italy each came with 4.8% of the beneficiaries.
The report also highlights the age profile. The 30 to 39 age group represented the largest share of both those who acquired Albanian citizenship, with 31.7% of the total, and those who renounced it, where this age group accounted for 43.9% of cases.
INSTAT explains that the statistics are compiled on the basis of data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The institute also emphasizes that, starting from 2025, a new administrative source has been integrated into the processing of statistics on the acquisition and renunciation of citizenship, which increases the coverage and quality of the data, making them more complete and more harmonized with international standards. / Pamphlet based on the INSTAT study
