Edith Harxhi says that the 2023 Census has been manipulated since the population of Albania is lower than 2.4 million inhabitants, as presented by INSTAT.
Invited to the show "The Unexposed", Harxhi stated that 940,000 Albanians have left the country and as proof of this, she uses EuroStat figures for Albanians who have sought asylum, those who have regular documents, illegal immigrants and those that are in process.
In the show, there was a debate between Harxhi and analyst Neritan Sejamini.
Excerpts from the conversation:
Edith Harxhi: Main data, the number of the population. We have extracted the figures of EuroStat. These are the numbers that are registered at EU entry points and channels, illegals and those who have received papers, or in the process. According to EuroStat, today we have a total of 940,000 Albanians who have left and have not returned. They are registered at the border points of the EU countries. They are the number of those who are legal, illegal and in process.
Neritan Sejamini : So 480 thousand people have received asylum?
Edith Harxhi : 478 thousand are with regular documents and have papers.
Neritan Sejamini : I have a residence permit in the USA and I live in Albania. How do you count me? One more argument and tell me there are so many people with residence permits.
Edith Harxhi : 4.5 million have civil records. INSTAT says that 108 thousand have returned. So they have regular documents and live in Albania. So you have more than half of the population abroad. Got the actual figure rigged.
Arjan Gjonçaj : You should not use a number that is not known how to interpret.
Neritan Sejamini : An Albanian who is born in New York and his parents give him Albanian citizenship, is he an immigrant or not? It's not because he was born in the US. It's American.
Edith Harxhi: I call him an immigrant. The census was done to see how many residents Albania has.
Neritan Sejamini : He is not called an immigrant who emigrated this decade.
