Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase was the first "big fish" to be convicted in two cases on charges of corruption in Romania. After him, 20 ministers were put in the cell...
The internationals are set in motion for Albania to follow the example of Croatia and Romania as far as the fight against corruption is concerned.
It's been almost 4 years since SPAK was established and it is still not going where SPAK's counterparts in Romania or Croatia have gone. Prime ministers, former prime ministers and dozens of ministers and deputies were arrested there.
But the signs are that things may change. The head of the Bureau of Investigation, Aida Hajnaj, and several investigators have conducted a 3-day visit to Bucharest. They were trained by the structure that arrested former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.
Aida Hajnaj's visit to Bucharest was made possible by the OSCE. " From 26 to 28 September 2023, the OSCE Presence in Albania organized a visit for a delegation of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to Romania in order to establish cooperation and exchange experiences and best practices with regional agencies of law enforcement.
The delegation headed by the director of BKH, Aida Veizaj met with the Romanian Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism, the National Anticorruption Directorate and the Law Enforcement Center of Southeast Europe. The director of the BKH and her counterparts in Romania emphasized that cooperation, continuous exchange of information and joint investigations between the law enforcement agencies of both countries are essential in the fight against organized crime, corruption and terrorism," the OSCE reports .
Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase was the first "big fish", let's say, who was convicted on two occasions on charges of corruption. We also have the case of the former deputy president of the senate, Dan Vojkulescu, who was sentenced to ten years in prison for corruption. He stayed in prison for about 2 and a half years. A part of his property was confiscated with a value of around 13 million euros. In total, there are 20 former ministers who were convicted of corruption or abuse of power in the last ten or 12 years in Romania.
Even the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, was asked by journalists today if the Romanian example is being followed and he said: "Of course, we can pass it." / Pamphlet
