Former Commander of the Naval Forces, Artur Meçollari, gave an interview to Euronews Albania, where he discussed Albania's security and the potential threats from the conflict in the Middle East and from international actors such as Iran and Israel.
According to Meçollari, Albania is not threatened by a war between Iran and Israel, except for the possibility of a cyber war from Iran. He emphasized that, although there is an Iranian opposition in Albania, represented by the Mujahideen, this does not pose a direct threat to the country's security.
" Albania is not threatened by Iran, despite the fact that we have the Iranian opposition in Albania from the Mujahedeen, which actually constitutes a problem between the two countries, which could create a problem from the point of view of cyber warfare, but this does not mean that it will be a problem with the country's security. Albania is safe from the point of view of the Israel-Iran war. This is a reassuring point," he said.
Regarding the most likely threat to the region, Meçollari emphasized that Russia poses a greater risk. In this regard, he emphasizes that the threat from Russia will depend on the outcome of the war in Ukraine.
"We should fear Russia more for its impact on the region, based on a prospective threat. Russia's threat will depend on the outcome of the war in Ukraine. If Ukraine wins, Albania and other countries are not threatened. The threat to Albania from Russia is part of the threat to all European countries. It is not an individual threat ," Meçollari explained.
In conclusion, he also added that the outcome of the war in Ukraine will affect the stability of the entire region, including the future of Kosovo.
