Abilekaj: Politicians are caught with intimate videos and get more votes

Journalist Enton Abilekaj said that unfortunately in Albania, the results of the elections cannot be measured by a democratic yardstick, since every time there are "scandals" even more votes are taken.

He recalled the case of the video scandal in the municipality of Kukes, where the mayor was filmed committing a sexual act in the municipal office, and again in the elections after his dismissal, the Socialist Party won even more votes.

"I am concerned that the unit of measurement we use is correct. I am giving an example in May 1996, the elections were disrupted, Berisha was president and Aleksandër Meksi was prime minister, the opposition came out of the elections, the ballot boxes were closed and the results were announced in some areas.

There was a protest, an international intervention. The US asked to repeat the elections in some areas, which were not repeated, a conflict was created between Berisha and the US and nothing was resolved on November 6, 1996. A reflection of this was expected from those elections. Instead of reflection, the result was 80 to 20 for the democratic party.

You can't explain it with a democratic meter, there is no logic. Today it happens that Shukriu is caught on video, Safet Gjici is caught on video, the elections are repeated and the result is higher again. What we have today that has no democratic measure, we live today in an authoritarian system of a single person who controls everything and does not even recognize the election commission" , said Abilekaj to "Euronews Albania".
