Kuçova base built for the Warsaw Treaty, now available to NATO, ex-MIG

In Kuçovo, near the first tactical air base of NATO in Albania, there is a base that was originally built during communism in 1952 with voluntary work, while since January 2022, work has started here where about 50 million euros have been invested to create a modern infrastructure with contemporary conditions to enable the deployment of NATO air vehicles which are expected to carry out training operations or use it for other needs of the Alliance.

"For the base of Kuçova, this is a good thing because it is set in motion. It is a base that will create opportunities for our defense capabilities because it is common and also for the economy of the city because there will be employment. It is a logistic base that will always be in development. It is in an extremely good position not only for our country but for the entire region" , said Viktor Vangjeli, former pilot in the Kuçovo regiment.

Kuçova air base was built to serve the Warsaw Pact where Albania was a member in 1952, but now it will be at the disposal of NATO, the largest military alliance that mankind has known and that serves peace and the values of western democracy.

"The area is completely open from all directions, which allows even when it rains heavily and all other planes to land without having a problem as they have at other airports, strong wind like Gjadri or fog like Rinasi. So it was chosen not only strategically because there was an aerodrome there, but also for the flight conditions" , said Astrit Jaupi, former pilot.

From this base, it is expected that the control of the Albanian airspace will be carried out, as well as the construction of the command center for the Bajraktar TB-2 armed drones that are expected to join the fleet of the Albanian army.

Work at the Kuçova airbase is still ongoing, although the inauguration is expected to take place on March 4. Work continues on the reconstruction of the runway and the control tower, while the armament and fuel depots, the aircraft parking lots and the emergency and fire stations have been built. /Top channel
