The new Librazhd-Bulqizë road, specifically the Zgosht-Çerenec Bridge segment, has become a serious problem for hundreds of citizens and tourists this weekend.
The road that passes through the tourist village of Fushë Studen, in the Steblevë Administrative Unit of the Librazhd municipality, was almost impassable until Sunday afternoon due to a lack of snow clearing and salting.
Sources on the ground report that the contractor responsible for maintenance has not carried out any intervention, despite the intense rainfall and low temperatures that created frost on the road. As a result, dozens of vehicles and hundreds of tourists traveling to Shebenik National Park have been stranded for hours in the area known as the Lunik Staircase.
Delays in response have worsened the situation, as requests from drivers and tourists for intervention have been taken into account only after a long time. This delay has left citizens exposed to the cold and the risk of accidents.
The asphalting of this segment, which connects Librazhd with Bulqiza and Peshkopia, has been presented as a boost for mountain tourism and the local economy. However, in this winter period with heavy snowfall and high tourist influx, the lack of a functional maintenance plan has highlighted serious problems in the administration of this road artery.
Just a few days ago, the Librazhd Municipality's ASHP intervened to temporarily reopen the road, after hundreds of residents of the area's villages remained isolated. The intervention showed that without an emergency institutional response, the situation would have even more serious consequences.
This investment aims to improve the connection between the two regions and ensure sustainable access to the natural areas of the east of the country. The lack of maintenance is risking to undermine this function, effectively limiting the use of the road in winter conditions.
The weekend event raises questions about the management of public investments, the responsibility of contracting firms, and the role of institutions, indicating the need for concrete actions to ensure that this strategic road does not become another problem during the winter season.
