The epidemiologist, Ilir Alimehmeti, says that the government's initiative to keep medical students in Albania for 5 years after completing their specialization is already having negative effects.
According to him, applications for registration at the University of Medicine have decreased by 40%
"Applications for registration at the University of Medicine have decreased by 40%. This is something we had not seen for many years, as medicine has been the most sought after branch. It was expected to happen after that much debated initiative and we had made it clear that we would have seen the effects. Further, after registrations, we will see that the level of accepted persons will be even lower compared to years. Which means that we are lowering the level of future doctors because of this decision without consulting the interest groups", says Alimehmeti on A2 CNN.
According to him, the solutions would be simpler and faster if the government had asked the interest groups.
Alimehmeti emphasized that every year there are students who choose to study abroad, but now those who still have hope that Albania will become are being pushed towards leaving.
"In September-October we will see a lower level in student performance. We will have a negative effect that millions of Albanians will suffer from an unconsulted decision by a group of people", said Alimehmeti.
