"May this holy day, which comes along with spring, bring prosperity and goodness to every home of yours and that of every Albanian!" , writes Begaj.
The holiday that symbolizes rebirth
Nowruz, also known as Nowruz, Novruz, Navruz, Nooruz, Nevruz or Nauryz, which means “new day” in Persian, is much more than just the beginning of a new year, it is an ancient celebration of life, rebirth and the triumph of light over darkness. With roots stretching back over 3,000 years to the era of Zoroastrianism, Nowruz heralds the arrival of spring and is celebrated on the vernal equinox.
On this day, in addition to religious rites, Bektashi believers also exchange visits and gifts with each other. The tables are also laid as if for a celebration, where there is no shortage of coin pie, greens, roasted meat and sultjashi. This dessert has milk at its base, which symbolizes mother's milk, rice which symbolizes abundance and sherbet which is taken while singing in the tekke.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a note on the United Nations website, writes: "As the world renews itself this spring, let us remember that every new year, and every day, is a chance for a new beginning; a chance to do things differently; an opportunity to build a better world."
The day of Nowruz brings together diverse cultures across Iran, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans and beyond, offering rich customs and values.
The origins of Nowruz can be traced back to the ancient Persian Empire and the Zoroastrian calendar, where it marked one of the holiest days of the year. Originally a sacred time to celebrate the rebirth of nature, Nowruz evolved over the centuries into a secular holiday embraced by numerous ethno-linguistic and cultural communities.
Today, Nowruz is celebrated by people of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, reflecting a universal desire for renewal, peace, and prosperity. International recognition by UNESCO and the United Nations underscores its importance as a unifying cultural event in our increasingly interconnected world.
