Portugal's elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 marked the end of an era for Portuguese football. The 1-0 defeat to Spain, sealed by Mikel Merino's 91st-minute goal, was also Cristiano Ronaldo's last appearance for the national team.
After the match, the 41-year-old announced his retirement from international football, closing an extraordinary chapter in Portugal's history. Ronaldo leaves as the first player to have appeared in six World Cups without winning the trophy.
In his reaction, the Portuguese striker highlighted the contribution he has made to the national team over the years, recalling the historic successes achieved during his time with Portugal.
"I will wake up tomorrow the same way I woke up today, with a clear conscience, because I have always given my best. I have won three trophies with Portugal. Before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal had not won a single title in history and for that I feel happy."
The most important trophy I have won with Portugal is the 2016 European Championship. For me, winning the European Championship is the same as winning the World Cup.
"I leave with a clear conscience, because I gave my best for Portugal. Tomorrow is a new day and life goes on," Ronaldo said.
