Criminology professor Ervin Karamuço has stated that the escort activity in Albania generates considerable income, which according to him can reach up to 200 million euros per year.
In an interview for the show "Top Story", he said that this is a criminal business that is estimated to bring in at least 150 million dollars in profits per year in Albania. He adds that the figure 'could even go up to 200 during the summer season'.
Karamuço emphasized that this figure only includes income from direct services, while according to him, other related activities significantly increase the total value: "It goes up to 300-400 million euros per year with third-party benefits because of this."
He also raised allegations of involvement of individuals within the security structures in illegal activities: "For some police officers, this activity is a profitable criminal business. They are involved head-to-toe in this trafficking."
Focusing on seasonal dynamics, Karamuço stated that during the summer the presence of foreign citizens practicing prostitution in Albania was also observed: "During the Behar period, we had students from France and Britain who prostituted themselves in Albania, of their own free will."
He added that these cases are related to temporary stays. "They came for tourism, they prostituted themselves, they took that money and they left. We also have this category," says Karamuço.
