There was extensive erosion, as firms or individuals worked very close to cultural monuments and works of art, at a distance of 30 to 50 meters.
Fiks Fare has been following the erosion of the Mat River for several months, starting from Rubiku, Skuraj, Ura e Zogut and ending in Milot and the highway bridge.
Along this entire length, there are large piles of inert material. Fiksi's camera traveled to that area a few months ago, filming excavators working very close to the bridge.
The footage broadcast by Fiksi shows the riverbed looking more like a large construction site than a river. There was extensive erosion, as companies and individuals worked very close to cultural monuments and works of art, at a distance of 30 to 50 meters.
Meanwhile, Fiksi also filmed erosion near the arched bridge of Mat, the Bird's Bridge. The excavator is working again near this bridge, a Cultural Monument destroyed years ago. The vehicles are taking gravel from the middle of the river.
The most scandalous thing was that excavators and heavy vehicles were also taking inert materials from the Treni Bridge, which connected the town of Milot with Lezha, a bridge closed in the summer of 2025. Before this date, the film filmed numerous vehicles working very close to the bridge, digging and taking large tons of inert materials. The works were at a very close distance to the bridge, about 30 meters.
In addition to environmental damage, erosion is also causing significant damage to the state budget. The Fiks Fare group went near the bridge in the village of Skuraj in Kurbin. The Lezha Irrigation and Drainage Directorate has opened a tender worth 92 million lek for the installation of a river dam, as erosion is "eating" agricultural lands. Studies and analyses have been conducted, where it has been proven that everything has happened as a result of erosion and the removal of inert materials.
The fix also went near the Old Bridge in Skuraj, which was destroyed years ago. An observation shows that the riverbed has deepened by about 2 meters. The piles and roots of the bridge have come out. The same situation with the bridge at the entrance to the city of Rubik. The bridge legs have come to the surface.
Meanwhile, erosion has also tilted the Zogu Bridge, a cultural monument. The bridge is in danger of collapsing. A tender worth around 50 million lek has been made to rehabilitate and restore it. A metal part has been installed, but the works have been left in the middle. The fix went to the Uura e Trenit, near Milot, in early July 2025. The bridge legs had come out again as a result of erosion.
Following these issues, the investigative show sent a request for information to the Water Resources Management Agency. The agency responded that there are several permits that are active in that area, as a result of the construction of several concessionary and important works.
Meanwhile, Fiksi has learned that studies and analyses have been conducted continuously, which show that in addition to licensed firms, there are also unauthorized ones operating in that area. Unlicensed works are those near works of art and cultural monuments. However, all works, both those with permits and those without permits, have caused damage.
The fix also went to the Irrigation and Drainage Directorate in Lezha. The employees say that they have made some investments, and that these investments have come as a result of landslides like the Skuraj case. According to them, the residents have requested intervention and tenders have been opened. The employees claim that the landslides have come as a result of erosion.
In response, the Lezha Irrigation and Drainage Directorate says that the tender for erosion protection in Skuraj came after the continuous request of the residents of the area. Then the Prefecture, AMBU and several institutions drafted the projects for erosion protection.
According to her, the problems in this area have come as a result of erosion of agricultural lands from the floods of the Mat River as well as the geological composition of this area, damaging a considerable surface of the land. Years ago, other protections were also built on both sides of the river's flow in different segments between the highway bridge and the Zog Bridge.
Fiks Fare has learned that the Train Bridge connecting Miloti with Lezhës (the old road) was closed on July 24, 2025 by the Albanian Road Authority. The reason was the exposure of the bridge legs, specifically those filmed by the Fiks Fare show in the series.
After this closure measure, from July 24 to the end of August, there was increased traffic on other roads. The Albanian Road Authority has opened a tender worth 108 million lek (about 1.1 million euros) for emergency interventions to protect the bridge legs./ TCH
