Germany "slaps" Greece: Beler's case belongs to justice,
The Greek Prime Minister with the German Chancellor

The Beleri issue should not be bilateralized and hinder Albania's EU membership...

Greece has received a very strong slap from Germany, as far as the "Beleri" case is concerned. As the government of Athens is trying to threaten by giving signals that it will block the integration of our country in the EU, this plan is not supported at all by the European authorities.

The Greek media "Ta Nea" has requested a reaction from the Foreign Ministry of Germany regarding the trial against Beler, but the answer was not what the Greeks expected.

The Germans have made it clear that justice is independent, as they say that Albania is among the countries that have progressed with reforms and no obstacle can be created in this regard.

" The Beleri issue should not be bilateralized and hinder Albania's membership in the EU ", is the answer given by the German Foreign Ministry.

" For the case of the candidate for mayor in Himarë, Fredi Beleri, investigations are currently being carried out by the Albanian authorities. We have to wait for the current process in Albania. Determinant for Albania's EU membership process is exclusively the fulfillment of the membership criteria, including the "acquis" of the EU. It is important that this is also the point of reference for all member states in their decisions on individual steps in the accession process. "Bilateralization" of the membership process is not acceptable , states Belrini Zyrtar, giving a strong blow to Athens.

According to the article, the Beleri case was discussed in the visit of Prime Minister Mitsotakis to Berlin and his meeting with Chancellor Scholz, not so much as it took up a lot of space in the talks between the two government delegations there.

Earlier today, it was the Minister of State of Greece, Savros Papastavrou, who stated that Fredi Beleri's imprisonment is not only a bilateral issue between Albania and Greece, but a European issue.

" The issue of Beler is fundamentally European, not bilateral. It is about respecting the rule of law. If Beleri had not been a member of the Greek ethnic minority or any minority, it is clear that Greece might not have expressed the same level of interest. However, as far as the EU is concerned, this should be seen as a European issue. If an executive authority in any country has the ability to refuse to swear someone in based only on personal preferences, this constitutes a problem for Europe ", he stressed.

The Greek minister, who last week visited Beleri in prison, hinted that the lack of progress on the matter could have consequences for Albania's EU membership aspirations.
