In today's session, the Special Anti-Corruption Court rejected Erion Veliaj's request to replace the security measure "arrest with imprisonment".
Veliaj's lawyer, Sokrat Gjermeni, said at the end of the hearing that the mayor did not go beyond the legal requirements that were submitted.
"We requested a milder measure, not imprisonment, which the court rejected. Veliaj was present and stated the same things that were submitted in the request. He did not go beyond the legal requirements. But the court rejected the requests. The prosecution maintained the position that the measure should continue. Despite the fact that the investigations are over, the evidence can be manipulated. This was the logic of the prosecution, but we do not agree with this logic ," said Veliaj's lawyer.
According to the lawyer, financial guarantees were also offered, or even appearing 5 times a week, but the requests were again rejected.
"A financial guarantee was requested, several measures were requested, an obligation to appear 5 times a week, a financial guarantee, a ban on leaving the country. So all the measures that are appropriate for the investigation to proceed, although these risks are illusory. We did not offer a specific amount, we left it to the court's assessment, but since the request was rejected, this option was not considered," said the lawyer.
Today, Veliaj was present in the courtroom, facing the two prosecutors in the case, the former head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, and Ols Dadon.
The latter have maintained the same position that the measure of detention in prison should continue as evidence could be manipulated.
Regarding prosecutor Dado, the mayor has filed a lawsuit with the Tirana Administrative Court, requesting the invalidity of the presidential decree appointing him as prosecutor in 2008.
Meanwhile, a preliminary hearing for Veliaj and the other defendants is scheduled for Monday, February 2nd.
The issue of the security measure is currently being reviewed by the Constitutional Court, as Veliaj is seeking its repeal.
Veliaj has been in prison for almost a year. He was arrested on February 10, 2025.
