Closed-door trial against Dumani and Dado, Veliaj rejects the appointed lawyer:
Erion Veliaj

At today's session to review the security measure at the GJJKO, Erion Veliaj appeared without a chosen lawyer, deciding to defend himself in the request for the replacement of the "prison arrest" measure.

Veliaj has rejected the court-appointed lawyer and has opposed any form of defense from her, arguing that he had no real knowledge of the criminal file.

According to him, such representation does not align with his interests and defense strategy and does not reflect his personal will.

He stressed that the right to defense cannot be limited simply to the formal presence of a lawyer, but requires effective knowledge of the evidence and real ability to challenge it. Veliaj indicated that on Friday he professionally tested the lawyer appointed by the court, which resulted in her not having sufficient knowledge of a voluminous and complex case, which according to the standards of the European Court of Human Rights requires a long and serious period to be mastered by a professional. For this reason, he stated that he does not accept that the defense act or speak on his behalf.

In this context, the request for a change of measure is also related to the objective impossibility of getting acquainted with the file in the conditions of isolation. Veliaj emphasized that the right to have full access to the acts and to build one's own defense cannot be realized by any lawyer without close cooperation with the defendant and without personal knowledge of the case.

He argues that under these conditions, detention has lost proportionality and conflicts with constitutional standards of due process.

"Pre-trial detention has turned from an instrument of protection and investigation into a means of punishment without trial and due process," said Veliaj.

We recall that in the courtroom, Veliaj was confronted by the two prosecutors in the case, the former head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, and Ols Dadon. The latter maintained the same position that the measure of arrest with imprisonment should continue since the evidence could be manipulated.
