A criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and money laundering was hit by a joint operation between SPAK and Italian anti-mafia authorities. The operation took place in Albania, Italy and Spain, and the investigations include several individuals suspected of involvement in international criminal activity.
The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime approved 10 security measures at the request of SPAK. In parallel, the Italian authorities issued 5 more security measures. The operation was extended to Tirana, Fier and Vlora, while checks and procedures were also carried out in Barcelona, Italy, and Madrid, Spain.
Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço, speaking on the "Last Hour" show on ABCnews, said that the targeted group should not be considered part of the Italian mafia families, but as a structured criminal organization that has built connections in Italy over the years.
"We are simply a structured group, we have no connections to the mafia families of Puglia," Karamuço said during a television interview.
According to him, investigations have also been conducted by the Albanian side and some of the people involved have lived in Italy for about two decades, where they have established ties with local criminal elements.
Karamuço said that the group had a role in drug distribution lines and in the transfer of criminal proceeds to Albania, where they are suspected of being invested through money laundering schemes.
"They have found it easier, also due to weak control, to launder money in Albania," he declared.
He added that the investigation remains open and that there are other suspects who have not yet been arrested.
In his statement, the expert also mentioned the name of Igli Kamberi, whom he said he does not associate with any mafia organization, but with persons involved in criminal activities for financial gain.
"These characters are suspected of being part of an activity that injects money into the Albanian economy," said Karamuço.
