Bird flu in Gjirokastra, area affected by infection isolated; dead chickens

In the village of Valare in Gjirokastra, the veterinary service has definitively confirmed the presence of H5N1 bird flu in 20 birds in a private yard.

After the first deaths were detected, veterinarians destroyed the chickens and sent the samples for special analysis to the ISUV.

Flora Zharkalli, head of the veterinary sector, says: "We received the answer that the animal was positive for H5N1 or avian influenza. The emergency group was set up according to the minister's order. The working groups carried out the destruction of all the animals that were alive, while it was found that 4 other animals had died. The measures in the case of avian influenza determine the quarantine of a 3 km area and in this area we only have the village of Valare, which we have in full control and visits to farms are carried out almost twice a day. The supervised areas have also been determined, which include villages, areas, units that are within a 10 km radius of the outbreak," writes TCH.

Twelve veterinarians, divided into 6 groups, are conducting daily inspections and inventory of poultry throughout the territory. So far, there have been no reports of other deaths.

Veterinarian Krenar Veli says: "Groups of control and service veterinarians are on the ground re-registering backyard poultry farms for a 10km area. The main damage is the economic damage that causes the death and elimination of all birds, but it is also dangerous for people who manipulate infected birds, so we call on citizens to notify the veterinarian of the administrative unit if they encounter a dead bird."

According to the contingency plan, the area of the village of Valare will remain in quarantine for a month, while there are no people infected with this disease. In the entire district of Gjirokastra, there are about 25 thousand birds, and this was the first case of avian influenza in this territory.
