An Albanian in Italy has become a hero after saving an 85-year-old man who was in danger of drowning in the Battaglia Canal, in Padua. The incident occurred around noon on Thursday, when the elderly man lost control of his car and ended up in the icy waters after a wrong maneuver near the Villa Molin area.
Elton Zefi, 35, who was passing by the scene of the incident, saw the sinking car and the shocked people on the shore.
"I wanted to jump right away, but a person stopped me and told me to wait for the right moment," he says.
The moment the old man started screaming for help, Zefi and another person jumped into the water. The car was almost submerged, but the trunk rose slightly above the surface and Zefi climbed on it to break the window, as it was the only place from which they could intervene.
The efforts paid off.
"After I broke the glass, a hand came out from inside and we pulled it with all our strength. It was difficult at first, but fortunately we managed. The old man came out alive and kept thanking us," he said.
Emergency services arrived a few minutes later, providing assistance to Zefi and the other person who entered the water, as the temperatures were very low. The 85-year-old was taken to hospital and is out of danger.
"I'm happy we were successful. The joy we felt when we pulled him out alive was priceless," said Zefi.
The event was also filmed by a local camera and the footage is circulating widely on social media, where Elton Zefi is being hailed as a hero.
