By decision of the Court of First Instance Against Corruption and Organized Crime, the former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, was handcuffed on July 4.
The security measure against Beqaj was taken at the request of SPAK, as part of the investigations into abuses of EU funds during the period that Beqaj held the post of director of SASPAC.
Beqaj was a deputy of the Socialist Party for several legislatures and was the Minister of Health from 2013 to 2017.
In 2021, he was appointed head of SASPAC by Prime Minister Edi Rama, even though he was being investigated for concessionary contracts in health.

As part of the investigation, the National Bureau of Investigation, BKH, undertook on December 27 a series of raids on homes, businesses, vehicles, as well as personal searches for eight suspects, including former minister Ilir Beqaj and his driver, Arben Dani.
In addition to the investigation into the abuse of SASPAC funds, Ilir Beqaj is accused of abuse of office for the concession contract for surgical instruments.
Abuses of SASPAC funds
