Former KLA fighter, Mecan Zotaj, called on State Police and army officers to stand by the citizens and not the government, during a speech given at the 51st anti-government protest.
Zotaj referred to the earlier protest in front of the Parliament, where protesters were confronted with police barricades. However, he stated that, based on conversations he had with officers on the ground, many of them supported the protesters' cause.
"I understand the police officers, who are doing their duty, but believe me, from close conversations with such police officers, everyone was with us. Everyone is with us. The police is with us. I am convinced that even the army, based on the oath they took to protect the homeland from all evil, is with us," he said.
During his speech, the former KLA fighter stated that the duty of security institutions is to protect the interests of the country and its citizens.
"The homeland is not defended by counting the protesters in the square. The homeland is defended when the cause is just. Protecting the homeland from the betrayal committed by Prime Minister Edi Rama and from the theft of citizens' lands is a duty above all duties," declared Zotaj.
He thanked the police officers for the way they behaved during the protest and asked them to continue to stand by the citizens.
"Thank you, continue to stand by the people, treat the people well, because the people will appreciate you even more ," he said.
At the end of his speech, Zotaj warned that the protesters will react if violence is used against them.
"If violence is provoked against them, believe that, against our will, we will return the same coin, just as we have returned with revolt to the betrayals that the government has committed these 13 years and others before them," he declared.
