This Sunday turned into a black day due to accidents. A tragic balance of 4 dead and 5 injured in just a few hours is an alarm that should draw everyone's attention.
Initially, a tragic accident occurred this afternoon in the city of Durrës, where two minor children lost their lives and another was seriously injured, while they were playing on the sidewalk. The incident was recorded in the Kënetë area, around 2:20 p.m., in neighborhood no. 15, where a vehicle hit three children aged 8–10.
The collision resulted in the death of two of the minors, while the third child is in serious condition and has been transported to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana for more specialized treatment. The driver of the vehicle, 57-year-old Nikoll Radaçi, is suspected of being drunk at the time of the accident. He is suspected of speeding, losing control of the vehicle and going out onto the sidewalk where the three children were playing. He has now been arrested by the police.
Later, another serious road accident was recorded on the Elbasan-Peqin national axis, near the village of Pajove. A heavy tonnage vehicle collided with a car, leaving behind three injured people, who were urgently transported to the hospital.
At around 17:00, a man aged around 45 lost his life as a result of an accident while riding a motorbike. The victim, identified as Arben Karamuço, lost control of the motorbike and went off the road, which resulted in his death. Fortunately, his wife, who was in the back of the motorbike, managed to escape with some injuries.
In addition to those behind the wheel at the time, there are several others to blame for these tragic results.
The culprits for these tragic balances, besides those who are behind the wheel at those moments, are also several others. The main culprit is certainly uneducated drivers who fail to understand the level of consequences that come as a result of their incompetence behind the wheel; be it speeding, disobeying traffic signs, or driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
The second culprit at this point is the police, who beyond the tireless work they do have many shortcomings in the way they do their job, when it comes to raising awareness and punishing problematic individuals. In many cases, 'turning a blind eye' as a humane gesture towards violators has created a culture among drivers in our country that violations are 'forgiven' or passed over with 'minimal penalties' and we see the consequences of this culture every day on the roads.
Last but not least, are the penalties provided for in the Road Code of the Republic of Albania. Although the value of fines has increased in recent years, this has not led to a decrease in accidents. In order to increase awareness among drivers, penalties should be made harsher and even more extreme measures should be foreseen for those who repeat the same violations. For some, this may seem like an excessive step, but it is better for irresponsible mistakes to cost us a few more coins in our pockets, until awareness is raised, than to pay with human lives every day./ Pamphlet
