Kujtim Cakrani, Ilir Meta's lawyer, has reacted after the Special Court's decision to reject the request for the former president to remain outside the glass cage during the trial.
In a statement to the media, Cakrani described the court's decision as unjustified, arguing that it violates the standards of a fair trial and creates a negative perception of the justice system. He added that the defense presented its arguments at the hearing, but that the trial panel referred to previous international practices that have no similarity to the Ilir Meta case and dismissed it.
"This is one of those decisions that shames the court. We made our request and the court dismissed it, referring to the cases of a Ukrainian and a Russian. The Ukrainian was accused of 43 murders, while the Russian was accused of violating the constitutional order," said Cakrani.
Cakrani said that comparing his client's case with people accused of very serious criminal offenses is inappropriate and does not stand up to legal scrutiny.
"The court, if it compares Meta with two terrorists, then the problem is the court. I am ashamed that an Albanian court with American training refers to Russian decisions. Who are we going to call from America? George Bush? We cannot tell George Bush to come here ," he said.
