The Constitutional Court today suspended President Bajram Begaj's decree for the early elections in Tirana, which were scheduled for November 9. The decision came after the Constitutional Court was moved by Erion Veliaj, who appealed to the Constitutional Court to declare Begaj's decree illegal and to suspend the elections in the Municipality of Tirana.
Security expert Fatjon Softa said that with this decision the elections have been suspended and no further action can be taken without the opinion of the Constitutional Court. Softa emphasized that after the suspension, a new decree will be needed for the elections in Tirana.
"The opposition in the Municipal Council has demanded the dismissal of Veliaj and this was not appreciated by the majority and a moment comes and it is said to vote to dismiss him, so it is a political decision. The fact that the leader of the government tells them to gather to dismiss him, they dismissed him politically, why didn't they do it in July or August. Now without the GJK expressing itself, you cannot take any action. How can the CEC act now when the election date is now suspended. But I say that a new decree is needed ," he said on the 'Frontline' show on Report TV.
