Since mid-January, following heavy rainfall in the Kukës region, Lake Fierza has been facing a significant increase in pollution. Its surface and shores have been covered in large amounts of waste, creating a worrying situation for the local community.
Images from recent days show significant accumulations of waste, despite the interventions of the Municipality of Kukes through the ecological ship that operates daily on the lake.
According to local authorities, cleaning is carried out regularly, but the flow of waste remains high, especially after intense rainfall.
Local resident Agim Cengu says the pollution phenomenon is not new. According to him, the situation has worsened this year due to heavy rainfall during the first two months, which has increased the flow of rivers flowing into the lake, including those coming from the territory of Kosovo and North Macedonia.
"The pollution has been going on for years. The ship cleans every day, but the waste is very large in quantity. With the heavy rainfall this year, the situation has worsened even more ," Cengu tells "News 24".
He emphasizes that daily cleaning is not solving the problem in the long term. "They clean it today, but they come back tomorrow. It's a cycle that doesn't stop," he adds.
According to the resident, the pollution has appeared since the creation of the reservoir after the construction of the Fierza HPP in the late 1970s.
He describes the situation as a serious environmental problem, claiming that the waste includes not only plastic, but also pharmaceutical products and livestock feed dumped in an uncontrolled manner.
The impact of the pollution, according to residents, is also affecting their livelihoods. In some cases, livestock grazing near the shores have consumed waste. Cengu says one of his cows has died, which he attributes to the pollution in the area.
Residents are calling for stronger preventive measures and cross-border cooperation to manage waste that ends up in the lake, so that this aquatic asset does not become a permanent source of pollution.
