Former Director of the State Police, Shemsi Prençi, stated that the opposition in Albania is in a deep crisis and the current leadership is exhausted. According to him, the country faces a real risk of political destabilization if urgent measures are not taken to reorganize the opposition.
"The opposition is more than destroyed with a worn-out leadership. When I say a leadership, I don't mean a single person. All those who are worn out in politics, normally have nothing to give. No more time should be wasted. There is no more time for experiments, because slowly in Albania someone says that a regime is being installed, and someone says that a regime has been installed, " Prençi declared on the "360 Degrees" show on ABC News.
He also mentioned that ideas are circulating in the public discourse about the creation of an “anti-patronage front,” which, according to him, could lead to a major clash in the country. Prençi called on internationals to pay increased attention to political developments in Albania.
" There are articulations that an anti-patronage front could be created in Albania, which could lead to a very big clash. The attention of embassies at this moment in Albania should be very high, especially the American one. The intelligence service in Albania is non-existent. The opposition will either reorganize with a new leadership, or else we will have a big clash and it is not good for Albania to go into this clash, " he added.
Prenç also underlined that mentioning crime as part of an anti-patronage front is a clear signal that political tensions could deepen.
"The fact that crime is articulated as an anti-patronage front means that there is a clash ," he concluded.
