The recent tensions centered on Iran have highlighted a deep rift within the Western alliance, particularly between the United States and Germany, raising serious questions about its unity and readiness in the face of global threats.
According to security expert Ilir Kulla, Iran has revealed that it is more than a distant threat; it represents a powerful scientific, industrial and military reality. With a highly sophisticated security system and developed as a regional military superpower after decades of conflict, Iran has demonstrated a capacity that explains previous geopolitical decisions.
In this context, Kulla added that the positions of former US President Donald Trump, often criticized by European allies, are now seen in a different light. The expert said that the real world requires concrete financial commitments and not just discussions about joint European armies, while existing defense budgets are not being met.
He further added that on the other hand, Europe, with Germany in particular, seems to have adopted an ostrich approach, ignoring the growing risks. Kulla, in the show "Të Pashog" on the "Pamphlet" YouTube channel, emphasized that the failure to fulfill financial obligations to NATO for years has created a security gap.
Kujtohet fare dy muajsh ishin.
You see, he said I was right. So, what has President Trump said these years, since 2016? You do not meet 2% of GDP for NATO. Now he says we must fulfill the commitment we made last year, which is 5% of GDP for NATO. So, it is not that we are living in a world that is not real, this is the real world. There are some others who are not real, those who say, no, we will create a European army. But you have the army, you have NATO and you are not paying the budgets. Do you know that in Albania, I am talking about our Albania that we have been a militarized country, I am not talking about other European countries. Since 2008, the youth no longer does military service. We assume that a disaster strikes. No fires, no floods, no earthquakes, like we have had. Who reacts? And who is asked to? Why? Because we have turned, by, we are behaving like an ostrich, honorable one. Since we put our heads down and do not see what, we say that this thing does not exist. Yes, it is philosophical, not because you do not see what is written here, this thing does not exist. So, the possibility of having a real war was shown to us in these days of war. And we were shown that even a power like Iran, which is neither China nor Russia, can make us talk to ourselves and we must be clear and sophisticated about what concerns preparedness for security issues. If we want to be, to have a détente, if we want to have a doctrine to worry about ahead and leave developed societies, children, developed families and others, we must be protected. We must have security. And the entire West must have this. We do not see Iran more as a threat, than as a reality of how the rest of the world is.
-No, okay, this part you raise, Trump is right, but on the other hand Merz is also right when he criticizes Trump's approach in relation to the fear of Western unity. It's not the fault...
Ilir Kulla: Well, yes, yes, unity, the unity of the West, how, how did it, how did it break down? The unity of the West has been breaking down since 2016 when Trump said meet 2% of GDP and who didn't meet 2% of GDP? Germany. Which was also the strongest economy in Europe. Now Germany has understood that, and now a program has started, but this program that has started now will take about 10 years.
Do you remember that President Trump said I need ships, he said about mine clearance, he said, about the security of the Hormuz Channel and so on. What did Germany say? I don't have it, I have that much for myself, he said. So, this thing has a beginning and there is an explanation for it to have an end. So, if we have arrived here, the fault is not only one side. Ah, where is Trump wrong? In the way he speaks. But the essence of a thing, he is right. In the essence of a thing, he is right. Where do you have the air defense of Europe? I heard a couple of grapes here in Albania who say, no, if the missiles are launched there, we won't be affected because there is air defense. Where is the air defense of Europe? There was no air defense of Israel and Saudi Arabia and I believe Israel and Saudi Arabia have spent a lot of money on missiles and air defense. These? These have not paid the salaries or social security of some of them.
-NATO air defense units shot down missiles that were also launched towards Turkey.
Ilir Kulla : No, they were shot down by Turkey's air defense, and they told NATO that Turkey is a member country. Now they are shooting down the air defense... we saw, Israel is the country with the most developed air defense. Israel is a country that spends a lot of money. Israel today, honorable, if it wants to attack a country in the EU, it is able to call up 500,000 reservists within three days. Which European country is able to do this job? It has not worked. So, we have an EU that is part of the Western security system, which, apart from doing business with China, with India, with whomever it could and so on, has not put water on the fire from this. Now it has started to put water on the fire. Do you mean that it is Merz's responsibility? No, because Merz has not been in politics, has not been prime minister, there have been several others before. But Germany is clearly, and not only Germany, one of those important NATO members that for many years has knowingly not met the 2% of GDP, which is a condition for NATO's existence.
