The criminal amnesty has become a cause of conflict between the majority and the opposition due to an amendment that includes a reduction in the sentence for persons convicted by the GJKKO for abuse of office and corruption.
Former prosecutor Eugen Beçi said on the Now show in Euronews Albania that the amnesty is overdue, and there should be more amnesty.
According to him, this is because people in Albania have been put in prison for social behavior that should not necessarily be criminalized.
"Having amnesty to regulate social relations... the fact that in Albania people were going to prison for lights, for water, for constructions without permission, social behavior that should not necessarily be criminalized. The amnesty is overdue and there should even be amnesty more often than there hasn't been for many years.
The amnesty should have been a little wider, it should have included other criminal offenses, due to the negligence that there is no reason not to be in the amnesty often. The amnesty eases the justice bodies, but it should ease them a little more because we have many detainees ", said Beçi.
