"It's Dritan Rexhepi's turn", Balla: There are wanted

After the extradition of the Portuguese Ruben Saraiva from Morocco, Albania is working on the extradition of Dritan Rexhepi, arrested in Turkey at the beginning of November 2023.

Minister Balla expressed full confidence that the bringing to Albania of the Portuguese accused of murdering businessman Ardian Nikulaj will help unravel a chain of murders.

"Without Interpol, such a realization would have been impossible. Bringing this person to Albania is extremely important to discover in this case not only a serious crime but a chain of serious crimes that have occurred in recent years. We are doing all efforts are being made to bring Dritan Rexhepin and other persons who have been detained at the request of Interpol Tirana to Albania and the procedures are being carried out," said the minister.

Balla further added that efforts are being made to extradite wanted Albanians who are also in South Korea or criminals who escaped from prison in 1997.

"We have cases of people who left prison in 1997. We have cases identified in South Korea, people who are wanted and we are making efforts to bring them to serve the rest of the sentence. I want to guarantee that during 2024 we will continue with well-prepared investigative work to identify where they are and how to bring them back. We have inherited a long list, unfortunately, of persons wanted by Albanian justice. Here, too, I want to say with all my heart, the cooperation with SPAK is Excellent and we are doing detailed work to end impunity," said the minister.

Balla also announced a conference that will be held on May 22-24, where Tirana will host all the senior leaders of the European police.

"Albania will host the highest European police officials at the European Interpol conference May 22 - 24."
