Dear participants,
Dear colleagues,
Students,
Friends and guests,
It is with great pleasure and honor that I welcome you to our renewed Seminar "Shkodra in the Centuries". This activity is a call to stop in time, to reflect and appreciate our rich cultural heritage and history, placing Shkodra at the center of our discussions, to read, appreciate it, and then continue to today ours, with the awareness of the cultural and human wealth, to which we are heirs.
The tradition of the seminar "Shkodra in the centuries", started in 1993 and held for ten years, every two years has been a monument of honor for the history, culture, literature, music and art that this city has produced and preserved with pride.
Today, renewing this tradition, we mark an important step towards the continuation of an open and in-depth dialogue on the values of Shkodra and its development.

This city, with its history and heritage, is an asset that does not need to be invented or polished. It is there, complete and tangible, like a treasure left to us by previous generations. Today, we have the duty and the privilege, the responsibility, not only to preserve it, but also to update it, show it and spread it around the world, being inspired by this city, to shape the future.
In an increasingly globalized world, Shkodra does not need to invent its own identity, its own tradition. Today, our challenge is not to invent a new identity, but to harmonize its powerful tradition with the demands of an increasingly dynamic and changing world.
Should we continue to call Shkodra the "Beauty of the Balkans," as Edith Durham described it? Or do we need to find a new way to integrate this epithet of the past with today's reality of artificial intelligence and economically well-thought-out developments? This question is a call to think about how we can build bridges between the past and the future, preserving the authenticity of the city and making it an active part of the modern world.

This workshop addresses these challenges and provides a platform to explore new solutions. Through speeches and discussions, we will reflect on art, language, tourism and technology, aiming to find ways to build a Shkodër that inspires and develops at the same time. In this context, the role of the University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi" is essential. This university not only keeps tradition alive as an inseparable element of the city, but also acts as a follower and promoter of sustainable development and innovation. As Gustav Mahler says: "Tradition is not the worship of grace, but the crossing of fire." The University has a duty and responsibility to keep this fire alive, building bridges between the past and the future, to inspire new developments. The municipality of Shkodra, with the spirit of cooperation it offers and the ideas it shares with us for the development of the city-university binomial, is pushing us towards a more applied profile of this institution, less theoretical, which is, in fact, the trend of universities today. We must have the university in the city and the city in the university.
Today, we are here to discuss and reflect on these crucial issues. This seminar, in the spirit of fulfilling our obligation to cross the fire of tradition, is another step towards the development of our city, uniting the harmony of heritage with the needs of modernity. I wish you successful and fruitful meetings and communications.
