
At the end of 2022, the number of foreigners with a residence permit in Albania was 18,151 inhabitants, marking an increase of 21.6%, compared to the previous year. According to data from INSTAT, the number of resident foreigners is dominated by men with 62.5%. "Scan Intel" has researched the indicators on regular immigration to Albania and citizenships acquired over the years to see how the number of foreigners in our country appears.
Albania offers residence permits for foreigners with a time limit of three to six months, one year, two, three or five years and permanent permits. We emphasize that in order to be considered an immigrant in Albania, you must obtain a residence permit with a term of one year or more with the right of renewal.
The year 2022 recorded the highest number of foreigners with residence permits since 2005, which registered 2,378 foreigners. Since 2005, the number of foreigners with residence permits has increased by about 7 times.
On the other hand, the number of applications for residence permits in Albania in 2022 was 10,127 applications, marking an increase of 11.2%, compared to 2021. But from which countries were the highest number of requests for permits submitted? According to the data, citizens from Italy, Kosovo and Turkey submit the highest number of requests for residence permits in our country. Next in the ranking are citizens from Egypt and the United States of America. What is noticeable from the data is the decrease in the number of applications of citizens from Iran in 2022, compared to 2021.
On the other hand, resident foreigners originating from Italy, Kosovo and Turkey constitute the largest number of foreigners with residence permits in Albania in 2022, with 2,948, 2,829 and 1,629 residents, respectively. Resident foreigners from Italy have increased by 26.9%, while those from Kosovo have increased by 51.4%.
"Scan Inel" among other things has also analyzed the distribution of residence permit applications according to the length of stay. One-year permits have the largest weight with 29.7% and are followed by permanent permit applications with 23.8%. Applications for a three-year residence permit have the lowest weight.
But what has been the trend of irregular foreigners in our country? Irregular foreigners registered in the territory of Albania or at the border, without the necessary documentation, result in 8,335 people in 2022, against 10,062 people in 2021.
