The Special Court has sentenced DP MP Qani Xhafa to 9 months in prison, a sentence that will be converted into a fine of 900,000 lek. He caused an accident while drunk by knocking down a pole in 2023 and was accused of drunk driving.
The prosecutor in the case, Sotir Kllapi, said that Xhafa was drunk while driving the vehicle, and that the deputy committed the offense of reckless driving.
He violated the legal relations for road traffic, the prosecutor said. During the pretext, the prosecutor stated that Xhafa should plead guilty.
The court told the prosecutor to take into account the fact that he is a member of parliament and is a family man and to sentence him to 6 months in prison but converted into one year of probation.
The lawyer said that his client has accepted the charge. "His behavior shows that he is an educated man, that day he had a family celebration with friends and was returning to his apartment. We are asking for the minimum sentence and the obligation to do community service," said his defense.
