
Since 1998, Great Britain has become the Eldorado for Albanians to emigrate.
Unofficially, it is believed that over 200,000 Albanians live in the island country today, mostly from Albania but also from Kosovo and North Macedonia.
Albania being considered a safe country by the UK government in 2023 has produced strong discouraging effects on Albanian emigration to this country.
This is shown by the latest asylum-seeking figures published by the Home Office, which Top Channel refers to.

During 2024, the total number of Albanian asylum seekers was 3,698.
If we compare the applications of 2024 with the previous three years, we are facing a drastic decline, especially with 2022 when the largest number of asylum seekers from Albanians was recorded, 17,340 applications after their arrival by dinghy.
This table details the number of asylum applications approved or rejected by the Home Office for Albanians. Only 3% were successful.

2,112 applications were rejected and only 100 were accepted. There are 3,478 Albanians awaiting the review of their applications.
At a time when asylum figures have declined, the number of tourist visas issued to Albanian citizens by the Home Office during 2024 shows a visa approval rate of 68%.
28,554 was the total number of visa applications during 2024 from Albanian citizens.
Of these, 20,192 received visas while 9,271 were refused.
Other official data from the Ministry of Justice in Great Britain shows the number of foreigners serving sentences in prisons there.
Currently, 1,193 Albanians are in English prisons, making them the foreign nationality with the largest number of prisoners in England and Wales, behind Poles, Romanians and Lithuanians.
In 2015, Albanians in English prisons ranked sixth.
A year later in fifth place.
In 2017 in third place.
In 2018, they ranked second and since 2019, they have held the top spot for the largest number of foreigners in English prisons.
There are currently 20 Albanians in English prisons serving sentences for murder.
Koci Selamaj, originally from Elbasan, imprisoned for murder with 36 years in prison, is the Albanian with the longest sentence ever given by an English court to a citizen from Albania.
Among those sentenced to life imprisonment for murder is Eugert Merizaj from Mallakstra, who is serving 32 years in prison and has stated in his live appearances on TikTok that he has applied to be transferred and continue serving his sentence in an Albanian prison.
Hellbanianz group member Sabajet Shuti from Kruma is the latest Albanian to be sentenced a few weeks ago in England for murder to 27 years in prison. / TCH
