Problems in the exhaust system continue to be the main reason why cars fail to pass the technical test on the first attempt.
The latest official data from the Directorate of Road Services and Transport shows that in 7 months, 167 thousand cars were tested, with 24.3% of them or 40 thousand vehicles failing this test.
"Throughout the year, 25-30% of the vehicles tested do not pass the roadworthiness test. This is considered a normal figure and fluctuates at almost the same levels year after year," said Arben Progni, director of the Vehicle Registration.
There are four main reasons that dominate the delay of cars in what is known as inspection.
In first place is the exhaust system with 37.8%, followed by visual and functional deficiencies, the braking system, and the steering system.
Despite the renewal of the car fleet used by Albanians in recent years, the age of the vehicles and the quality of the oil remain the main reasons why cars fail the technical test.
In parallel, the DPSHTR also offers a temporary vehicle deregistration service for all those who do not use their vehicle for a certain period of time. But who are the groups that apply most for this procedure?
"For the period January-July 2025, we have 4,300 individuals who have applied for temporary deregistration. Those who apply are people who have cars with an average age of 22 years. These vehicles also have the highest taxes, so the benefit from temporary deregistration is even higher," Progni explained to Vizon Plus.
Meanwhile, in these 7 months, 4,500 vehicles with an average age of 22 years have been permanently deregistered. This figure is an indicator of the vehicles that have been removed from circulation, which are a risk of accidents and environmental pollution.
