International rights lawyer Alban Avdulla commented on the news that a sovereign Bektashi state similar to the Vatican will be created in Tirana.
Avdulla said that it is still unclear what was the problem that needs to be solved with the creation of a sovereign Bektashi state within Albania.
He raised the question of whether this would really serve religious tolerance, since the latter is still protected by the constitution, while allowing the creation of a sovereign state would mean that the Albanian state would no longer be isolated from religious beliefs.
"We are not clear who is the reason for this initiative? Do we want to give more autonomy? But this has also been resolved by the Constitution, which defines independence and autonomy for self-administration.
If the aim of this was the expansion of autonomy, the constitution also allows this, but not the creation of a state within the state. We do not have a natural cause for arriving at this solution.
Prime Minister Rama said that this will increase religious tolerance, but how was tolerance violated, that it is guaranteed by the Constitution. If it allows a religious community to create their own state, this creates a problematic precedent, but violates Article 10 of the constitution. You are no longer separated from your beliefs", said Avdulla for "Euronews Albania".
