A serious issue has erupted in the Albanian agricultural sector: Shipments of tangerines from Albania have been returned to several EU countries after tests revealed residues of banned pesticides, such as Chlorpyrifos and Phosmet.
It is not yet known for sure whether the poisonous mandarins are a domestic product or imported, but they are circulating on the Albanian market and are being consumed by consumers.
According to previous reports, shipments of tangerines from Albania have been rejected by countries such as Croatia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Lithuania.
The acts constitute not only a reputational issue for Albanian agricultural products, but also a real threat to the health of consumers, especially children and people with weak immune systems.
Chlorpyrifos, for example, has been banned in the EU since 2020, due to its impacts on children's neurological development, while Phosmet is also exempted from use./ OraNews
